i.d.case
How often do people with fat wallets want a solution, money clips, using your pocket to carry around cash and cards. How often when you go out a night maybe to a club do you crave for something light. One of the major lifestyle problems, this was the first project i worked on at case-mate. Very soon the I.D case was one of the biggest sellers of all time in terms of cases. Its available in the AT&T store, walmart, radioshack and many other retail outlets.
I.D Case
Researching various user scenarios, i found that this problem presented a unique opportunity for creating a meaningful and useful accessory that the users would really appreciate. The product had to be exceedingly simple and almost clever that would be the unique selling point. The solution was really simple but it took me a while to narrow down a clear design direction. However our contract manufacturer seemed to have a solution and being very proactive created this CAD file.
The argument was to put the cards in behind the phone and the viewpoint being that it would be safe, however with this the problem of the cards not working as the magnetic strip wears out, also i was envisioning this to replace clutches and fancy purses that women carried to night clubs, or even men with big fat wallets to carry something sleek and sophisticated. Using this method though would create a really bad user experience as the user would have to pop their phone out, depending on how drunk you are, the results would be different. So to prove my argument i built a few simple mockups.
Convinced the executive leadership gave me a few more weeks to come up with a design that would be easy to manufacture, creative, innovative and fresh. The idea was very simple and not a whole lot of creativity, how hard is it to make a slot in the back to carry 2 cards. Right ??....it was quite a bit of work tweaking it and deciding how the case would look and also feel.
The design and product was very well recieved, we sold well over 80K of the ID cases, it was featured in many magazines and also was given away on the Bonnie hunt show. The ID case was also featured at the sunset festival in california, and also won us the most innovative manufacturer award for our entire line of products from our distributor. All in all it made me one happy designer.
Problem
The design took a promising shape and i was pleased with the final design, i had added a slot in there to distinguish what cards you were carrying, also a push button at the bottom to push the cards out, but later realized that the slot would we unnecessary. Alex Marshall created these renders to visualize what finishing to add and certain colors we could specify.
We then tweaked the design to its final form and also communicated to the contract manufacturer by sending control drawings and dimensional drawings to detail certain parts. However a lot of picture mockups were also used in the process. Below are some for your reference :
